Show Some Spine
April 15, 2011
I visited a wonderful student-run café this morning at a local elementary school, an inspiring way to start the day—meeting the kids and staff involved in the project, having tea and coffee cake with my friend Linda, and running into fellow writer Heather and her daughter at the café as well. The only downside was having to forgo my Friday morning poetry workout. So instead of the clerihew and other forms that remain on my list this month, I decided to try a little book spine poetry in the time I had, something I’ve seen others across the blogosphere having fun with in recent weeks.
You can see a great gallery of spine poems over at 100 Scope Notes. Below are some short ones I created:
The girl who fell from the sky,
wings from the wind—
a time of angels
How the soldier repairs the gramophone
tinkers,
talking like the rain
Is this normal?
Real mermaids don’t wear toe rings.
Woe is I,
Ramona the Brave
A short guide to a happy life:

Martha, it was so cool to see you this morning at my son’s school–just a gentle reminder from the universe that twitter and blogs are fabulous, but when you CAN meet in the flesh…
Let’s get together!

It’s fun finding verse and meaning in titles, isn’t it? I’ve got another one today made from titles of poetry books.
